Overview
Claires Court Junior School in Maidenhead required a practical solution to create a temporary overflow car park that could be used during the wetter months of the year. The school already used a grassed area as additional parking during dry weather periods, particularly for weekend activities, half term events and end of term gatherings. However, during autumn and winter the ground conditions deteriorated significantly, making the space difficult to use.
As rainfall increased, the grassed area quickly became wet and boggy, leading to traffic movement issues and vehicles struggling to park safely. The school was exploring long term options to construct a permanent hardstanding car park, but planning permission and fundraising requirements meant this solution would take time.
JAK Hire was asked to provide a temporary solution that would allow the area to function as a car park during the winter months while protecting the ground and avoiding costly installation works.
The Challenge
Creating a temporary overflow car park for a school environment presented several challenges that needed careful consideration.
Seasonal Ground Conditions
The existing grassed area worked well during dry summer months but became unsuitable for vehicles once rainfall increased. The ground quickly became soft, leading to wheel ruts, muddy surfaces and reduced traction for vehicles.
Without intervention, continued use would risk permanent damage to the grassed area and ongoing access problems.
Traffic Management at Busy Periods
Claires Court Junior School regularly hosts events and activities that increase vehicle traffic. At key times such as:
- Weekend activities
- Half term events
- End of term gatherings
The lack of additional parking created congestion and vehicle movement issues around the school grounds. A reliable overflow parking area was needed to improve vehicle flow and provide safe parking during busy periods.
Permanent Car Park Not Immediately Viable
The long term goal for the school was to construct a larger permanent hardstanding car park. However, this required:
- Planning permission approval
- Funding and fundraising
- Design and construction works
- These factors meant a permanent solution could not be delivered in the short term.
Alternative Solutions Were Impractical
Several alternative options were explored before contacting JAK Hire.
One option was to install chip bark across the area. However, this was quickly ruled out as it would:
- Become wet and muddy in winter
- Transfer dirt onto surrounding surfaces
- Require removal and disposal as contaminated waste
Another option was to install a temporary membrane with Type 1 aggregate on top. While this would create a firm surface, it introduced several challenges:
- High installation costs
- Significant time required to construct
- Disruption to the area during installation
- Additional costs for removal once no longer required
The school therefore needed a solution that was quick to install, cost effective and fully reversible.
The Solution
JAK Hire recommended using TuffTrak ground protection mats to create a temporary overflow car park that could be installed quickly and removed easily once conditions improved.
Rapid Installation
One of the key advantages of using TuffTrak mats is the speed at which they can be deployed. For this project:
- The temporary overflow car park was installed in a single day
- Minimal disruption was caused to the school grounds
- The area was immediately ready for vehicle use
- This rapid installation meant the school could begin using the overflow car park almost immediately.
Durable Ground Protection
TuffTrak mats distribute vehicle loads across a wide surface area, preventing tyres from sinking into soft ground.
This allowed the grassed area to be used safely for parking without:
- Creating wheel ruts
- Damaging the turf
- Causing vehicles to become stuck
The mats also provided a stable, non slip surface for vehicles entering and exiting the parking area.
Flexible Seasonal Use
A major advantage of this solution is that it can be repeated year after year. The mats can be installed:
- At the start of the winter season
- During periods of heavy rainfall
- For specific events that require additional parking
- Once conditions improve, the mats can be removed quickly and the area returned to normal use.
No Planning Permission Required
Because the mats are a temporary installation, they do not require planning permission. This allowed the school to introduce a temporary overflow car park immediately while continuing to explore a permanent long term solution.
The Outcome
By using TuffTrak mats, Claires Court Junior School was able to solve its short term parking challenges while continuing to plan for a permanent car park in the future. TuffTrak ground protection mats installed to create a temporary overflow car park for school events
