Overview
Temporary access for building replacement was required to support a phased construction project involving the removal of an existing structure and the installation of new buildings. JAK Hire was brought in to provide a flexible ground protection solution that would enable safe access for deliveries, crane operations and site teams across multiple stages of the programme.
The project required two separate matting installations at different points in the build, before a full removal once works were complete. This approach ensured the site remained accessible and protected throughout, without unnecessary disruption or long term ground damage. The works were carried out for Rollalong, with site contact Stuart Clarke.
The Challenge
This project presented a number of logistical and environmental challenges, particularly due to the phased nature of the works and the sensitivity of the ground conditions.
Phased Construction Programme
The project required matting to be installed, removed and then reinstalled at different stages. The first phase focused on widening access and enabling the removal of an existing building, while the second phase supported the installation of new structures.
Access for Large Vehicles
Larger delivery vehicles needed safe access into the site, which required widening existing routes. Without protection, these movements risked causing damage to the ground and surrounding areas.
Crane Operations and Working Area
A crane was required both for the removal of the existing building and for installing the new units. This meant creating a stable crane pad as well as a safe working area for site operatives.
Protection of Underground Services and Tree Roots
The site contained underground services and nearby tree root systems that needed to be protected throughout. This made it essential to use a non intrusive, load spreading solution that would prevent damage below ground level.
The Solution
JAK Hire designed and installed a phased temporary access and crane support system using TuffTrak ground protection mats.
Phase One: Access and Building Removal
The first installation created a widened access route, allowing larger delivery vehicles to enter the site safely. At the same time, a crane pad and working area were established to facilitate the removal of the existing building.
This ensured that both heavy lifting operations and site traffic could be carried out without damaging the ground or impacting underground services.
Phase Two: Building Installation
Once the original structure had been removed, the matting was adapted and reused to support the next stage of the project. This included providing access for incoming materials and creating a stable base for crane operations during the installation of the new buildings.
Ground and Environmental Protection
TuffTrak mats distributed loads effectively across the surface, helping to protect:
- underground services
- sensitive ground conditions
- nearby tree root systems
This allowed heavy plant and vehicles to operate safely without long term impact on the site.
Flexible and Efficient Delivery
Because the mats can be installed and removed quickly, JAK Hire was able to respond to the phased requirements of the project, ensuring the right level of access was available exactly when needed.
The Outcome
The project was completed successfully, with both the removal of the existing building and the installation of the new structures carried out safely and efficiently. The phased matting solution allowed the site team to maintain access throughout the programme while protecting sensitive ground conditions. By using TuffTrak ground protection mats, the contractor was able to manage multiple stages of the build with a single, adaptable solution that supported crane operations, deliveries and site activity without causing damage.
