Overview
Temporary building removal was required ahead of new construction works, with safe crane access needed to lift and load the structure from site. JAK Hire was asked to provide a temporary trackway and crane pad solution that would allow the building to be removed efficiently, while also supporting other site activity and deliveries during the programme.
The matting needed to remain in place for around a week, giving the site team enough time to complete preparatory works, coordinate deliveries and carry out the lift safely. A simple but effective layout was designed, consisting of a temporary access track and a working pad for the crane and associated lifting operation. This project was carried out for Rollalong, with site contact Patrick Nollan.
The Challenge
Removing a temporary building may appear straightforward, but the success of the operation often depends on access, ground conditions and the ability to create a safe working area for lifting equipment. In this case, the site required a practical temporary solution that would support several activities within a short period.
Safe Crane Access
A crane needed to access the site, set up safely and carry out the lift without causing damage to the surrounding ground. This meant creating a suitable route in and a stable pad where the crane could operate.
Support for Ongoing Site Activity
The mats were not only required for the lift itself. They also needed to remain in place for a week so that other works and deliveries could continue around the site in the lead up to the building removal.
Efficient Programme
The removal formed part of the wider sequence of works ahead of new construction. Timing was important, and the access solution had to be quick to install, reliable throughout the week and easy to remove once the job was complete.
Protecting the Ground
The site required a temporary, reversible solution that would allow crane and delivery vehicle movements without creating unnecessary damage or leaving the area difficult to reinstate afterwards.
The Solution
JAK Hire installed a temporary access track and crane pad using TuffTrak ground protection mats, creating a practical route for the lifting operation and a stable working area for the crane.
Temporary Trackway Installation
A clear temporary track was laid to allow site traffic and lifting equipment to reach the building safely. This ensured the crane and support vehicles could access the working area without causing ground damage.
Crane Pad for Building Removal
In addition to the trackway, a dedicated matting pad was installed to provide a suitable base for the crane during the lift. This created a stable working platform for the removal of the temporary building and the transfer of the structure onto a waiting lorry.
Week Long Access Support
The matting remained in place for around a week, supporting:
- crane access for the building removal
- site traffic linked to other preparatory works
- deliveries required before the next phase of construction
This gave the client a flexible, multi-use access solution rather than a single day install.
Fast, Reversible Solution
Because TuffTrak mats can be installed and uplifted quickly, the project team benefited from a temporary system that supported the works without introducing long term disruption or complex reinstatement.
The Outcome
The project was completed successfully, with the temporary building removed safely and loaded onto a lorry ready to be taken off site. The temporary track and pad gave the site team the access they needed for the crane operation, while also supporting other works and deliveries across the programme.
By using TuffTrak ground protection mats, the site team was able to carry out the building removal efficiently while protecting the ground and keeping the project moving ahead of the next construction phase.

Customer Experience
“JAK Hire provided exactly what we needed for the removal works. The track and pad were simple, effective and gave the crane team safe access to complete the lift without delay.”
“The matting solution worked well across the whole programme, not just for the lift itself. It supported other site activity during the week and made the removal process straightforward.”
